So the Science of Epigenetic’s now shows us the mechanism for variation between members of species. It isn’t that random mutation, population reduction, mating/coupling, population migration all punctuated by Natural Selection don’t happen. They all do. Evolutionary Science still holds. Those processes are changing characteristic expression by altering lifeforms at the Epigenetic level more so than at the genetic level. This helps explain why any two members of the species (humans) are 96.9 % genetically identical (save for X Y chromosome between gender related differences). Any two population group species members are not 96.9% identical at the Epigenetic level !!! Now the other 3.1% is primarily associated with non-coding regions anyway.

So does all this affect Darwinian Evolutionary Theory? Does it change anything or just add one more of many levels of detail / resolution to the existing scientifically sound paradime.

Well it does because it adds one element to the above four (5) as listed: Mutation ; Gene Drift ; Coupling ; Population Reduction ; Selection. And it goes without saying each of these is a major category now with sub-elements. Epigenetic changes can now been traced back to direct environmental pressures. Environmental influences can now directly affect phenotypic expression and be passed down across generations.

Another way it impacts - if differences between species members are primarily due to Epigenetic differences then the direct link between micro-evolution and macro-evolution just changed. That is to say micro-evolution is at the Epigenetic level. Macro- Evolution still has to be at the Genetic level. I still believe in Evolutionary Science. I just think our understanding of Evolutionary Science is now starting to expand beyond Darwinian Evolution.
